Learning outcomes of course unit

The students will acquire detailed knowledge of multimedia real-time communication and collaboration on the Internet. In this context they will become conversant with the basic mechanisms of IP-based communication (instant messaging, SIP, XMPP, etc.) and the related (multimedia) communication possibilities on the Web (video conferencing, Twitter, VoIP, etc.). In addition to pure communication the students will have an in-depth understanding of solutions for IP-based collaboration (eCollaboration) such as application or document sharing, pervasive social collaboration, etc.

course contents

In this integrated course the students will acquire knowledge of basic topics in IT communication and cooperation. These include: team collaboration and cooperation: strategies and additional resources for cooperation in the (distributed) software team (source code management systems using the example of Subversion (SVN) and GIT); shared editing of documents; technical aspects of distributed data storage, maintaining consistency by means of changes, late join mechanisms (initialization of the state); presence and instant messaging (XMPP); session management (SIP); web collaboration and communication: principles and innovative web applications being applied: e.g. MindMeister (online brainstorming), Badoo (interconnection of participants on the basis of interests), ReCAPTCHA, Mechanical Turk, MyTaxi.net, etc.; eCollaboration and multimedia: techniques and applications in multimedia communication (VoIP, Twitter, video conferences); pervasive collaboration.
