Web-based Man/Machine Interaction and Visualization

Learning outcomes of course unit

The students will learn the principles of designing web-based or mobile interaction interfaces and will be able to use them unaided within the context of interactive systems. The students will have in-depth knowledge of evaluating and classifying man/machine interfaces. In this connection they will be conversant with the basic techniques of interactive computer graphics, processing sensor data in addition to audio and visual information (e.g. spoken language). The students will be in a position to design interactive applications according to a user-oriented design process and to analyze and evaluate user interfaces using methods of usability evaluation.

course contents

In this course, instruction is given in basic topics in the areas of man/machine interaction and visualization. Emphasis is placed on the following: interaction paradigms, interaction techniques and UI architectures; design criteria, guidelines and norms for modeling and creating user interfaces and interactive systems; approaches and methods (quantitative and qualitative) for the evaluation of interactive systems and user interfaces; established approaches for pattern recognition (language with "hidden Markov", faces with "Viola/Jones"), handwriting recognition, object tracking; virtual environments; web style guides and evaluation criteria for websites; principles of representing information and data visualization; interactive information visualization; guidelines for mobile and ubiquitous interaction. In the exercise component of the course the theoretical content acquired in the lecture component will be illustrated using practical examples and implemented within the context of a small project to be completed in a team.
